Abstract

In the UK, few, if any, units have the manpower to assess every pregnant woman. Therefore, attention must be targeted at high-risk cases, even though most mothers, when asked, express a wish to see an anaesthetist antenatally, and the care of most pregnant women involves an anaesthetist at some stage. This contribution covers the aims of and reasons for antenatal anaesthetic assessment.
